Hullabaloo Hoppers Busk at Hulbert St. Festival...

Long awaited Mother Daughter Photo Shoot!

Aren't these 2 the cutest? Zoe came to me last Jan wanting to purchase a mother daughter photography session for her mother, Louise's birthday. I jumped right at the chance!

It was a really fun morning in Hyde Park, and watching both Zoe and her Mum interact really made me think about the importance of having photos with your loved ones. It is really nice to just look at the photos and think back to the memories you've had on that day with the session, but also the wonderful relationship you have together!

Dean & Annaleen are Engaged!

My colleague Mary is one awesome mother!

In the last 6 months, I've had the privilege of photographing 3 of her beautiful daughters!

The first was Verity and her lovely family, then Lisa & Shaun (who still makes the list for one of my favourite engagement shoots!), and now the beautiful Annaleen and her fiance, Dean!

The photo shoot took place at Hyde Park, and both Annaleen and Dean were such a pleasure to shoot. It is always so easy to tell when a couple are in love! The ring was so gorgeous as well!

In April, I had the opportunity to photograph the beautiful Sharon Davis.

Sharon Davis is quite the talented swing dancer who also does burlesque and travels around the world doing what she loves... teaching the dance.

The photoshoot was on a very wet and rainy day, and Sharon was just such a pleasure to photograph. You could call it a photographer's dream.

Thursday Night Swing with Steven Mitchell Band

The monthly anticipated Thursday Night Swing night with the Steven Mitchell Band was held once again and hosted by Swing Zing...

Steven Mitchell and his band were amazing and lent some awesome dance tunes for the dancers to swing away.

The night also paid tribute to the late Frankie Manning. Frankie Manning is one person who needs no introduction in the Swing Dancing world. He was a dance instructor, American dancer, a friend to many people, and also considered one of the founding fathers of Swing Dancing.

The night also said farewell to a Jake Meadley, a dance instructor at Swing Zing, friend to all of us, who has taken up work in Corrigin. We wish him all the best!

We spent the last day of the Perth Lindy Exchange at the beautiful scenic King's Park. It was a sunny afternoon, a lovely picnic had been set up, Giant Jenga... and fellow dancers gathered.

Onlookers stopped and stared to marvel at the group's obvious circus talent. Thank you to Trevor Hutchinson & Paul Stone who helped with some of these photos.

Rehashing January... the photoshoot with 21 people

Whilst I was in Singapore in the month of January early this year I was lucky enough to photograph this beautiful family of 21! Many also flew into Singapore especially for this photo shoot.

Li Hsien, a fellow Lindy Hopper saw my photos via Facebook and contacted to book me in for a family photoshoot. Facebook is quite the powerful social networking and business tool!

I still remember the hot and humid day, and the kids all running around. The most important thing was the love and laughter that the family shared with each other!

Thank you for sharing this moment with me, I really enjoyed this session with everyone!

New York- Asheville- Friends I left behind...

For those of you who know me, you probably know that I live, breathe, eat Swing Dancing and Photography.

It has been part of my goal in life, to make swing dancing part of my travels, wherever I go to in the world. The socialisation that comes with dancing is so awesome for those of you who who have never experienced it. We all speak the same language; that is our passion and love for the dance. And sometimes, we meet at some other part of the world.

The only sad aspect of it is when we have to say goodbye... thank you for all the memories, dancing... and the laughter, hugs and drinks!

I'll see you soon on the dance floor, some place, some time.

Lindy Focus, Asheville, North Carolina

Lindy Focus 2010 (27th Dec to 1st Jan 2011)

Back in sunny Perth, very sunny, in Western Australia 39d or 102F. I am wishing for snow instead, there's a Cyclone warning coming through.

Lindy Focus was a pretty awesome event with at least 500 people in Asheville, North Carolina. Getting there was a little tricky for me, as I was leaving from from NYC. All the airports were snowed in, and I only got to Asheville at 4pm on the Thursday.

I was sort of living on a Murphy's Law thing, that anything could go wrong, would go wrong. On my last trip to NYC in 2005, Northworst (sorry Northwest) airlines lost of luggage. There was no way in hell that I would be at a Lindy event without my dance shoes!

I decided to take a smaller bag, and not check in my luggage. Delta planes are tiny, and they had to take everyone's hand carry bags at the gate anyway in exchange for a pink tag. Hmmm... ok. When we got to Asheville, remember Murphy's Law? Not only was my flight delayed for 2 hours at La Guardia but, the 'elevator' that carried the hand luggage got jammed and the doors didn't open. Now, the irony of the situation was that the peeps that checked in their luggage, got their luggage and I was still waiting...

So... finally at Lindy Focus... here are some photos of teachers that I took that I liked!

What I really love is the intensity of people's faces when they are dancing.

New York so far

New York has been a bundle of emotions for me so far...

I got to see snow for the first time and ended up in a Blizzard...

My lovely cousin, Vicky lives there and generously put me up. She is awesome!

I spent a lovely Christmas there and then was very excited to go to Asheville, North Carolina for some Swing. Unfortunately, as many of you know, all the flights going in and out of JFK were cancelled due to bad snow.

I was pretty devastated but took things in stride, my cousin took me to see The Nutcracker with the NYC Ballet at the Lincoln Centre. It was pretty amazing.

I thought I would go swing dancing in NYC. I arranged to meet up with Trev and Annaliese who are from Perth and are travelling around the country. Due to the weather, many gigs and events were cancelled... which added to my downer. However, the one night that we managed to go out, it was pretty awesome!

Leaving Perth and feeling nostalgic...

thought I would hang out with my little friends before I left on my adventure...

Hung out with my little friend Ruby Nator today... we spoke about cupcake purses, Santa and hair clips in between cinos... mmm she loves gingerbread but the waiter with erm ginger hair scares her apparently.

I then hopped over to hang out with my other friend, little Aalia Nator. It has been a few good months since I had last seen her!

She loved playing with her little tubes and her best friend is unfortunately a little curious monkey and not me... :(

A few photographers and people have been asking me about how I create that feel in a photograph.
The photography language used is often, "how do you photoshop it?", "What filters do you use?"

As a photographer, I thought it was very important to develop a style in my photography. This was simply because anyone, and everyone has a digital camera these days. Also, many people feel like it isn't important to have photos specially taken as anyone can take a photo these days.

I believe that everyone's a photographer, and everyone takes photos that they love. I decided to go into vintage photography. I wanted to create photos that creates a nostalgic mood when anyone looks upon them. I wanted to create a romance and nostalgia.

So. here's a before and after photo for you to compare. I didn't use any filters in Photoshop. The trick is good lighting, subjects who are so awesome, a little touching up in photoshop and tweaking of some colours in lightroom.

Surely you can agree that Little Evie was perfect to start with?

Also, a couple of people have asked me why I'm so pedantic about people not cropping my photos in Facebook or removing the watermark. There's a simple answer to that, a lot of thought is put into creating the perfect composition for every photo I take, why would anyone want to mess with that? Also, there's this other thing called intellectual property. Thank you to everyone who has respected that!

There is a photographer for everyone and I may or may not be the photographer for you.

"Closer to Home" Book Launch

My uni friend, Mel came to me with an idea 3 months ago. She asked me if I would like to be part of her project, her vision, which was a book with a compilation of stories about parenting. No sugar coating, just about telling parents, about the experiences of being a parent.

I am not a parent. I have never had kids. Why am I here? I'm here to support a friend, and friends who are parents.

It is awesome to see Mel's vision finally come into being. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your vision, Mel. And also, for allowing me to display the beautiful photos of my clients and their beautiful families!

Lisa & Shaun are just way too cute.

My colleague, Mary was so excited when her daughter, Lisa got engaged and asked if I would take some photos as her present to them.

It was a lovely evening and the sun was setting, Lisa and Shaun are just so in love and as a photographer, it always warms my heart to see this when I look through my photos.

Do you like these hearts that I cut out hastily half an hour before the photo shoot?

Lisa and Shaun had a thing where they gave each other gnomes... how cute!

Lisa and Shaun were such sports! They were willing to do whatever I asked them to! Even if it meant they looked a little silly at times. But oh so cute!

The thing that was especially cute was that I came with my Polaroid in tow, and so did they!

Weekend of Swing!

The Hullabaloo Hoppers got busy this weekend!

Firstly, they started off in Wanneroo, dancing to "Launch for a Good Cause", raising money for children with disabilities.

The performance team danced their little hearts out in the scorching heat, and played too!

The next day, they then too off to Jazz in the Park at Memorial Park in Mosman Park (that was one too many park park park in that sentence!).

Along with a few other bands, Libby Hammer made an appearance, that lady is always sexy! The Hoppers had a picnic and hung around with friends!

A night of many performances, live music with the Kalamunda Youth Swing Band, and dance is something to be expected at the monthly Leedy Hop with Swing Zing. The telethon team put up a great performance and it was so nice to see the other dancers from taking part in the performances as well.

Swing Zing at Freo!

I decided to go into Freo last Saturday for the Norfolk fest, as well as to cheer on my Swing Zing mates. They are pretty hard core swing dancers... Freo in the afternoon, Telethon at night and Telethon once again with WAYJO the next morning!

I was a little upset with the shadows from the trees casting on the faces, but sometimes you just can't help that with a live performance.

Evie, 8 month old little munchkin

I just love Evie! So in love! She's the happiest little baby I've ever met, from 6 weeks old to 8 months old.
Her mum Em and I were friends from Uni, we did our Grad Dip Ed together. I photographed Em when she was pregnant earlier this year.

Her photos are the first three in this album.

I then took some photos of Evie when she was six months old, some of you might remember her from my advertising leaflets and my calling card.

I have been bugging Em for awhile to take some photos of little Evie at 8 months old. She's so gorgeous and always has a smile!

Melanie & Michael's engagement!

This weekend I was invited to photograph Melanie and Michael's engagement party. A few months ago, I photographed Mel and her sisters, with their mum and granny at the beautiful Tranby gardens. I know Melanie and her sister, Flick from swing dancing years ago and was simply delighted when I was asked to take photos of the engagement.

I was so excited to be part of this event! Here's the lovely Melanie and Michael!

Ashliegh in Wonderland!

I am so excited today to bring you this post! Yesterday, I had the pleasure of hanging out with Ashliegh, Nicole and Lauren on a vintage photoshoot in Wonderland!

Ashliegh is a very talented young lady and very good with all things vintage and making these beautiful hair pieces.

This is one of my favourites!

One of the things I love most about photography is being able to capture a mood! Some of these photos turned out best when someone cracked a naughty joke (thanks to Nicole)! I love nostalgic moments!

I love Melbourne!

I was sent to Melbourne by my school to the ATOM Awards 2010 this year.

The last time I was in Melbourne was in 2002 or 2003 I think, I had forgotten how beautiful the city is!

The buildings were just so gorgeous!!

I loved how I was able to just walk from one end of town to the other. In fact, I didn't even get to take a tram or a bus.

My students, Hannah, Gabby & Jasmin (Jas chose to stay in Perth for the year 12 graduation instead) were finalists in the Secondary School Category, and although they didn't clinch the top prize, I am so proud of them! Hannah & Gabby went along with their mummies!

I was astounded by how beautiful the Plaza Ballroom at the Regent was!

Vince who was the MC for the night.

These were the dudes who beat us! :) They were nice enough to say to the girls that they thought our film was way better than theirs!

Sigrid Thornton was such a nice lady and she took time out to talk to the Hannah & Gabby.

Sensory Overload

When I was out and walking I found this coffee shop with the best coffee ever! The little place is called "Sensory Lab" and it's on Little Collins Street.

Joel & Nicky visit the Swan Valley!

Today I visited the Swan Valley with Joel and Chungs (who are visiting from Singapore) and Dessie and Nicky!

It was so cute watching Joel play with Nicky! I've always wondered what runs through little kids minds all the time when they interact with each other and with adults...

Here are some of the moments captured...

I really love the expression on their faces... Joel laughing at Nicky and Nicky looks like such a bad boy...

One of my favourites of Nicky today. This photo was what sold him from a, "I don't really want to pose for you" to "Take my photo!" It is amazing what you can do as a photographer once you start to interact with the kids... you can't take a good photo without playing with them and turning it into a game.

This is Joel's moment whilst the adults were taking part in some wine tasting... what is going through his mind I wonder?

"Look up Joel!"

Photos are such an important part of childhood, I always cherish my childhood photos and love flipping through them when I visit my parents in Singapore!

Joel visits Perth!

It was so lovely having one of my best friend from high school, Chungs visit from Singapore with her little one Joel, and her husband, Gerald. It must have been a year since I've seen her and about 2 years since I've seen little Joel.

Chungs is pretty yummy for a mummy of 2! Too bad little Nicole was back in Singapore :(

Anyway, we caught up and I stole a few photos of the family..

The Wedding of Lindsay & Michael Anderson...

Some of you might remember Lindsay and Michael from the engagement shoot I did last July. This one was of my favourite shoots ever! I remember the first time I stepped into their little Mabel St. house, I was stunned to find everything vintage, from furnishings, lights, to numerous vintage and retro cameras, typewriters and vacuum cleaners galore. It was heaven for me.

Debra's Hen's Party

This hen's party was so unique on its own. It had a pin-up gal theme and the gals all really dressed up to the core!

Debra looked so awesome that night (left) and one of her 6 bridesmaids, Margarette organised me to take their photos! Boy am I glad I accepted this challenge!

As many of you know, vintage is so my thing! I thought for about this gig for a bit as I had a wedding on the same day, prior to this as well. I had just spent more than 6 hours, taking photos for Lindsay's and Michael's 1940s themed wedding (blog and photos to come soon!), and then off to the Hen's party!

There were drinks, games and the ladies were all very well dressed indeed!

The girls then hopped in the diamond lounge coach (which sits 30 by the way) to tour around Perth before hitting the clubs!

Chasing the Sun with Hannah Jane...

It was an amazing afternoon and sunset...

Hannah was so sweet to accept my request for an afternoon sunset photoshoot... we were trying to create a folky, earthy feel. The afternoon went along the lines of... "be Julia, you are Julia... " as in trying to exude an Angus and Julia Stone feel... well without the Angus... just Julia.

Hannah was so amazing she was prepared to lie on the grass... stand amongst the weeds, despite that there might have been snakes... :)

A technical skill I was trying hone was sun flare and placing the subject in front of the sun. The shots went something like... "move two steps forward Hannah... ok... back one... move up one... or too much... ahhh the sun is going down fast! Grow taller... be shorter... move left... NO my left!" So um... thanks Hannah!!!!

I think they worked out well...

When the sun sets... it goes quick, we practically had 5 minutes to take these shots! We were practically chasing the sun!

All in all, it was what I thought a successful afternoon. To add pressure, Hannah's parents are both professional photographers...

Thanks Hannah, I could not have done this without you.

Catching up with the Hensby Family!

Today I caught up with the Hensby Family to deliver some prints. Marta and I used to work together and I took photos of her husband Steve and her whilst she was pregnant!

I then had the opportunity to do a photoshoot of their cute little darling, Finn, when he was about 10 weeks old.

It was a memorable shoot as it was over so quickly but we ended up getting such awesome grunge photos! Finn is such a rockstar, just like his daddy!

Here are a couple of our favourite shots from that day...

As a thank you present for their help with promoting my work, I gave them a framed photo! I really love this shot as I think there is so much emotion in this photo.

Of course I couldn't resist sneaking a few shots during brunch... I did eat! I swear! There's so much love in this family it just warms my heart!

The Adventures of the Stembergers!

I had such a lovely time yesterday afternoon at Matilda Bay with the Stembergers. It was so much fun hanging out with little 7 yr old Joshua, Katrina, David and of course, Giraffe!

The Saturday started off with a drizzle in the morning which resulted in a beautiful overcast day by the river, pretty awesome for photos I must say!

Josh is so cute and charismatic, it is difficult to imagine that he is only just 7.

Part of what I love about photography is being able to capture nostalgia.., a photo is pretty much a moment captured in time... sometimes when a subject is being captured unaware. These are photos that hopefully, the family will cherish for a long time.

And not forgetting Josh with Mum!

The day could not have ended better with one of my favourite shots from the day!

Today was also the day I brought out the 70-200 zoom lens... got to start working out my arms and back... or find a really good chiropractor! :)

First entry!

I have been feeling rather compelled to add a blog to my photography page at dabelynphotography.com.

So, welcome to the first entry of my Photography Blog. The purpose of this blog is to share my passion of photography and perhaps share some behind the scenes thoughts with anyone who would want to read it.

I thought I would share a few of my favourite photos from the month of September!

Matilda Bay

This photo was taken on a beautiful overcast day at Matilda Bay during sunset... I thought the photo would look better in Black and White and I also saturated the clouds for a more dramatic effect.

Shanel's Baby Shower

I love photos take are taken by chance. This was at a client's baby shower... a couple of little girls stood for about 5mins contemplating whether they should let the balloon go... and away it went... the tagline, "It flew away", was something one of the girls said.

Daniel & Connor

I took some really cute photos of Daniel & Connor... Connor is such a rock star... he was really good with the poses and sooooo patient while waiting for us to get shots of little 7 month old Daniel...

I was trying to work on creating a grunge look with Connor. His dark pink shirt just worked so well with the trees in the background. I upped the blacks, upped the clarity and sharpened the shot to the max!

Desiree

Des is just awesome, we were walking home from lunch one day and the light was perfect and the field, perfect. Everything was so natural, I said, "stand there, Des! erm please?"

CJ's shoot was really enjoyable... she had so many different shots she wanted to cover... marriage celebrant, funeral celebrant, crazy actor head shots, serious actor headshots, and even one for a murder theme party. I'll let you guess what these ones for!
